Officials Announce Major Commercial Development in Junction City

A 4,500 seat-arena, indoor water park and hotel, military museum, tournament soccer and softball facilities, movie theaters, restaurants and shopping. It’s all coming to Junction City. The City of Junction City, Junction City-Geary County Economic Development, and officials from D.J. Christie Inc. announced Wednesday that Junction City will be the site for “Smoky Hill Market Place,” a stunning new development stretching along the south side of Interstate 70. The project will be a focal point for the rapid growth and development in Junction City and Geary County, and will provide recreation and entertainment venues for residents in Geary, Riley, and surrounding counties.

“The agreement announced today is the result of the tireless work and collaboration between city, county, state, and business leaders,” City Manager Rod Barnes noted. “This development will add an exclamation point to the already incredible growth we are seeing in this region and will be a unique blend of shopping, sports and entertainment, and community activities for residents throughout the area.”

David J. Christie, President of D.J. Christie, Inc., said “The Smoky Hill Market Place project is a tremendous opportunity for partnership between local and state government and private development to the serve the people of Junction City, Geary County, and surrounding communities.”

The 300-acre development is expected to bring 500 new jobs to the area and over $200 million in investment. “The soccer complex will be a tremendous facility, drawing regional soccer tournaments from surrounding states,” Christie noted. The development will include more than a dozen soccer fields, as well as a 4,500-seat, 85,000-square-foot arena for tournaments and other events.

Prominent in the new development will be a Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, as well as a military museum.

Also included are retail shops, restaurants, major “big-box” retailers, movie theaters, a water park and hotel, and home improvement/garden centers. Located south of Interstate 70 between Chestnut and Washington streets, Smoky Hill Market Place will draw in visitors from the entire state, according to Barnes. Christie added, “The entertainment component of this development offers visitors amenities that are customarily offered in large metropolitan markets.”

“This project is one in a series of major developments that reflects the forward thinking of regional leaders, including those at the state and Geary County,” Barnes said.

Construction is expected to start in Fall 2007. D.J. Christie Inc. is a Kansas City-based real estate development firm that has projects across the state of Kansas and Missouri. The company has completed projects with nationally recognized chain store operators as well as numerous regional and local operators.
